On Friday a judge in Costa Rica ordered that David Strecker, a United States citizen be held indefinitely and without trial at the centro penitenciario San Sebastián prison complex in southern San José. Despite his advanced age (65 years old) Dave has been confined to an overcrowded prison cell and is forced to sleep on the concrete floor. Prosecutors have yet to bring formal charges against Dave, and may decide to begin a case against him in two months, when he is scheduled to appear again before a judge.
Although the audio recording of Dave is difficult to hear, he thanks you for your contribution. As of this afternoon, a total of 32 contributors have sent $1,550.18 to assist with Dave’s legal expenses.
Given the outcome of his last hearing, it’s clear that the legal battle will be a lengthy and costly one. A new attorney is trying to have Dave released pending trial. However, it’s still unclear if Dave will ever get a day in court. Once foreigners enter the criminal justice system in Costa Rica, it’s rare for them to be released as court delays and postponements drag on.
The money raised so far doesn’t even cover his initial legal expenses, and he has a long road ahead. Please consider making a donation. Also, please be aware that a number of copycat websites and Facebook pages have appeared. There are even unknown people requesting donation through Bitcon. [donate] This page, cubadave.com is Dave’s web page and is the only fund raiser that is in contact with his attorneys. If you donate here, the money will go to fund Dave’s legal expenses.
